Julio Monteiro Martins – A passion for emptiness

Mankind in a nutshell

In this book, Julio Monteiro Martins presents 21 stories, including “Italian Snapshots”, composed of eleven micro-stories on the same subject. Subject that is the driving theme of the entire collection: the “passion for emptiness”, that characterizes mankind nowadays, although there are stories that sound like memories (“Hotel Till” among all), or reveal understated aspects of everyday routine (“#11”) and even creative writing lessons (“La feritoia e il volo” -“The slit and the flight”). A composite parade of human figures passes from misery to the sublime, and sometimes breaks into the fantastic: a kind of human zoology manual, sharp, never dull, and punctuated by acute observations. Beautifully written, with a sophistication that’s never idle, and a real and lively taste for words.
