A journey into the soul
The Voyage Out is the first work by Virginia Woolf, an initiation novel about life and love, where we can already find many of the subjects Woolf cared about, at times narrated in a Jane Austen tone. The rich English, spending their holiday in the Southern seas, are finally away from civilization and the journey is an occasion and analogy for self-discovery.
The protagonist will find love but, since Woolf is not Austen, the ending won’t lead to a happy wedding. A work abounding with sharp dialogues, intensity, self-exploration, and depth.
