A spider web in the empty space
A masterpiece including almost all of the major Sciascia’s poetics’ subjects , presented in a gloomy and disenchanted mood: God, the Mafia, culture, the devil, the relationships between art and power and between Christianity and Islam, Sicily as a symbol, the failure of any attempt to change. This is a representation of the sulfurous political power at the time of the Christian Democrats of Andreotti. “Ministers, deputies, professors, artists, financial experts, industrialists: what they usually call “the ruling class”. And what did they actually run? A spider web in the empty space, their own labile web. Yet made of golden threads”. And the character of Don Gaetano, the antagonist, is unforgettable.
