William Dalrymple, an expert on the Indian sub-continent (In India and Delhi are two great books to understand India) takes us to Afghanistan, in the mid-1800s, to recount an insane and unprepared English military operation among the world’s most impervious mountains. The beginning of the Great Game, a game of chess with no holds barred for the control of the region among European colonial powers, summarized in an emblematic and tragic event. A must read (even if the price is, let’s face it, very high) to understand. Because History does not forgive, and those who do not know yesterday’s mistakes are destined to relive them today.
